Wireless Access Point Question?
In a dorm your only supposed to use the schools wired connection to connect to the network. If I were to hook up a wireless access point, and hide the SSID, for myself and only myself to use, would the campus IT be able to trace it? I know its possible, but how easy is it and likely that it will be traced? Is there any better or more crafty ways of doing this?
I only ask because the only network connections are in the worst possible spot of the room and none in our common area, and I don’t really enjoy walking around my dorm with a 20ft cable.
Thanks in Advance

Yes you can turn off the ‘broadcast’ of the wifi router ssid and most people will not know its there. I assume this is a common practice. The IT guy with a sniffer will find you if he cares to. Ask the upper classmen if anyone ever got busted for this.
