What is the difference between an ethernet cable and an ethernet “crossover” cable?
I would like to wire my two computers together so that data could be transferred. Both computers have an available ethernet port. I have additional ethernet cables available. How do these cables differ from the crossover variety? How much should I expect to spend on a crossover cable?

A crossover lets you be able to transfer data WITHOUT a rhouter or hub. their around $10, not too exspensive

A cross over cable I believe is for connecting switches to switches, hubs to hubs, and computers to computers. While the other kind, a straight-through, is used for connecting combinations. A cross-over should cost you the same amount as a straight through, it is almost exactly identical, except one end of the cable has a few wires switched around.
I’m not even sure if you need a cross-over, because some computers might be able to adapt to whatever type of cable is used to connect them.

In a crossover cable two of the wires are switched so that the two computers think that they are talking across a network.

the basic of network cables are "crossover cable" is for connecting two same device (like: pc to pc, router to router, etc) and the other one is "rollover cable" pretty much the diff of the other. it is use to connect two different device (like pc to router, router to switch, etc).

Straight Cable vs Cross Cable
Cross Cable usually use on Pc to Pc , Switch To Switch.
Straight and Cross has same cost , the different is howto arrange color of cable
Cable has 2 side front and end with 8 cable with different color , there`s standard color for UTP but i think it`s not important, just arrange the color as you wish

you can actually make your own crossover cable. The normal cable have this color coding. Both side have these sequence.
WhiteOrange=Orange=
WhiteGreen=Blue=
WhiteBlue=Green
=WhiteBrown=Brown
on both sides on the other hand the crossover cable has 1 different side. The other side is coded like these
WhiteGreen=Green
=WhiteOrange=Blue
=WhiteBlue=Orange
=WhiteBrown=Brown

A crossover cable flips the transmit and receive pairs of wires in the cable. Most hubs and routers already flip the pairs in the connection, but a computer to computer connection would require the cross over cable. As for the price, should be close to the same as a normal cable.
