I just got a "Wireless Access Point/ Router?" what the world does it do?

I’m NOT a computer techy guy- Someone just gave me a NETGEAR Wireless Access Point thing. Can someone explain to me in laymans term what it does?
I currently log on to the internet via wireless signal that are "borrowed" from other people in my apt building that do not have their signals encrypted. My laptop just picks up the signals.
Is this access point thing something that can benefit me? Will it create another free signal or make the ones available much stronger?
If not, i’m selling it because I do NOT plan on paying for an internet service
FYI- I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT YOUR IDEALS ON "STEALING" OR "LEGALITY" OF MY INTERNET CONNECTION.
If people are tard enough to not encrypt the signal then it is a free open source for the public to use, just like free WIFI hotspots anywhere.

Can I plug a ethernet cable into a wireless router?

Basically, I just bought Ethernet plugs which connect to a wireless router and then to a power supply. Then I plug another one in my room and use an ethernet cable to connect online.

But I want to transmit this connection as a wireless signal where I am using a wireless router.

Is this possible?

is there a ETHERNET cable Wireless adaptor?

Hi, My wireless router will not reach a far away bedroom in my house. I have an actual ETHERNET (or CAT-5) cable running up there. I was wondering if there is such a thing that would plug onto the ETHERENET cable, and give off a wireless signal. (if so, what is it called?)
and How far should a Wireless router send a signal? (its a Wireless G, D-Link)

Thanks, in advance.
I have D-Link (DL 624) I have it sitting underneath my plastic computer table in the corner. I am only getting a 15 foot rang on it, even if I put my laptop on the floor. (line of site) how do I boost the signal strenghth?

How do I disable routing in a wireless router?

I want my router to send a wireless signal without assigning ip addresses. I am in a school and have received two wireless routers to expand our wireless network. I want my machines to get their ip address from our main network not from the wireless routers. Can I turn these routers into just signal senders?

Wireless Access Point / Signal Enhancement?

I have a bit of a project ahead of me

I’m looking to Increase my Wireless signal.
Being in a Basement apartment causes some grief with this issue.

Now My hope is to do this for under 100$ FREE being better
I have two extra routers to work with a D-Link WBR 1310
and a TRENDnet tew-432brp

Now I know their old and Junk (TRENDnet)

So , I was hoping to turn one of them into a Repeater , Access point, something to enhance my signal to increase my Connection for both my PC’s.

Any ideas on how to do this?
My Primary Router is a Wirless N Cisco

My end hope is to achieve at least a 80-100% connection rate for my apartment depending on my location of course. Something Gaming worthy , Stream Worthy and more importantly Backup worthy. I daily back up to an off site server I have.

I welcome all Ideas, options , and Theory’s alike. More then willing to attempt them.

Thanks in Advance
Well unfortunately the Wireless N has no external Antenna , nor does it have the ability to add one it seems.

I need a situation that has no wires. This is why it’s more then a typical project for me.

So , unfortunately I Won’t be able to use any wires with this..

My hope was to get the Wireless N to connect to one of the Standard Routers and then (essentially) bounce the signal from the router to my PC’s and any other things.. Gaming Consoles etc..

So
Main Floor Wireless N —> Router G in Basement —> PC(s)

Help for a wireless access point?

I’ve been browsing ads for wireless access points but can’t always determine if they will meet my needs. I currently have a wired ethernet router that also broadcasts a wireless G signal. I am looking for a wireless access point that will pick up the existing signal and act as a wired router for at least two other ethernet connected devices. Basically, it would allow me to have a wired network in one room, another wired network in a second room, and the two wired networks connected by a wireless signal.

What does a Wireless Access Point do?

My family just got one, and apparently I’m trying to figure out what exactly it does differently from a router? Apparently it provides a wireless signal, but what practical use is this?

What would I use to create a wireless signal from a computer already hooked up to a network?

I am in a large networked house and the wireless router is downstairs and some distance away. Where I am there is no wireless signal, but my desktop is on the network (wired). Is there a device I can plug into my desktop and use it to add a wireless signal from my computer? I know a wireless router would do it, but will that interfere with the router already on the network?
