Our organization has a computer and it is hook to a wireless modem via ethernet cable. The network can be accessed because it is not encrypted and is an "open" network. Can a malicious hacker easily access our computer, or does it take a sophisticated attack to gain access?

I have a real computer, several years old now, with a D-Link wireless modem. I wanted friends visiting to be able to instantly connect to my network, and it’s worked great so far. I recently bought a tiny netbook for surfing, and also had that connected for the last month.
After reinstalling my netbook to the factory defaults, I can’t figure out that magic combination to get the wireless working again. In trying to look up the settings on my tower, I must have inadvertently changed a setting because now it’s not broadcasting at all.
A month ago I came across a wonderful link that gave simple instructions to exactly what every setting should look like, but no luck finding it again. I know it’s a vague question without listing all my specs, but does anyone know of a page that breaks it down simply? Or is it time to call geek squad? Thanks for the help.
I want to get a modem for college and for home that gives out a good strong signal and is basically reliable. I don’t know what else to really look for in one, but I would prefer a fairly cheap one. Also, you can still hook up a wireless modem and be connected to the internet at the same time on a home computer too, right?
