I just got a "Wireless Access Point/ Router?" what the world does it do?
I’m NOT a computer techy guy- Someone just gave me a NETGEAR Wireless Access Point thing. Can someone explain to me in laymans term what it does?
I currently log on to the internet via wireless signal that are "borrowed" from other people in my apt building that do not have their signals encrypted. My laptop just picks up the signals.
Is this access point thing something that can benefit me? Will it create another free signal or make the ones available much stronger?
If not, i’m selling it because I do NOT plan on paying for an internet service
FYI- I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT YOUR IDEALS ON "STEALING" OR "LEGALITY" OF MY INTERNET CONNECTION.
If people are tard enough to not encrypt the signal then it is a free open source for the public to use, just like free WIFI hotspots anywhere.

You need to connect it to an internet provider or it’s not going to work. You plug it into a router in your home and computers can connect wirelessly to it.

Its no good to you if you plan on continue to steal other people’s signals.

access points ‘extend’ the signal. In your case, sell it. it’s not worth any more discussion

You are illegally using another persons internet service.
That aside, you need internet service to use that wireless router. It would give you what you are getting now, only legally.

Legal matters aside, if your laptop received signal throughout your entire apartment then you have no need for the router. If you have a weak signal that disconnects you from time to time then you can potentially use your new router in ‘bridge’ mode but only if your router supports it, but being that you described it as a Wireless Access Point or (WAP) then I am assuming it does. What you would do is…
1: Plug it in an area of your apartment that receives the best wifi signal from your neighbors.
2: Then you would press the reset button on the back to reset it to factory defaults.
3: Connect to your router from your laptop wirelessly
4: Log into your router using http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.10.1 OR http://192.168.100.1 (it depends on which model you have as to which address it will be set to), once you have reached the routers config page you will have to enter the default username and password (here is a list…. http://www.phenoelit-us.org/dpl/dpl.html
5: Once you are logged in, look around all of the settings for Bridge mode or WAP mode. Once you find it be sure to read the Help or Support files so you know what your doing
6: Enable it, and now you will have a stronger boosted signal from your neighbor.
P.S. Depending on your neighbors LOCAL IP/DHCP range you may have to change yours so look for that stuff in your help files too.
