im not sure what kind of modem you have: dial up or broadband
if dialup, you would to install on your desktop a wireless lancard (i cant be sure if it needs a gateway feature) then enabled windows’ internet connection shareing.
if broadband modem, just buy a wirelss router.
or if i misunderstood your question… perhaps you want your laptop to use the modem?

If you want to share Internet to only one lap-top at the moment, you need a wireless NIC, after added it to your PC, you can make an ad-hoc connection and share the Internet on it,
Good luck

Yeah, a wireless hub would not be the proper device in this case.
You would want a wireless router that provides NAT translation.
Take the wireless hub back and purchase a wireless router instead.
Make sure that you power off your modem for about 15 minutes before connecting the wireless router so that it will be able to accept the MAC address of the router instead of the MAC address of your computer.
