How do I setup a wireless router with out a wired connection?
My ethernet port on my laptop is not functioning. I bought a wireless modem with the hopes of being able to set up internet access without a port. The instructions are telling me that I need to use a wired connection to set up internet. Is there a way around this? I hae an old desktop in my closet. Can I use this to setup the wireless router?

you can use a wired connection from a wireless router with a LAN cable, there will be a port on the back of the router and connect to laptop just like a phone cable.
Otherwise you will need to buy a wireless dongle for the laptop if the wireless modem is not working.

To use the setup CD, you must use a wire. You could pull your desktop out for 5-10 minutes if it has a working network adapter, that would do the job. This is the easiest way.
It is possible on many routers, but NOT recommended. You have to make sure nobody else around has an unsecure network with the same default name because that will make it impossible to set up (your computer will try to switch between the two as you adjust settings – you may accidently reconfigure your neighbor’s connection). Assuming you don’t have any other networks with the same default name, you can manually configure everything – connect to the wireless (usually it’s named with the brand of the router) and go to it’s config page. Try http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.2.1 and login will ‘admin’ or blank for username; and ‘admin’ ‘password’ or blank for the password. Then, you need to set the network-name (SSID), wireless security (encryption), administration (system config) password, and try to connect to the internet.
It has to be hardwired to set up the connection.
After that, it doesn’t matter, unless it’s reset.
You’ll need to use the desktop, if only for a few minutes.
