How do I make my wireless router work for both computers?
The desktop connects through the internet through a cable modem. The computer only has one port in the back. I’m trying to hook up the wireless router I just bought. So I can have an internet connection for both the desktop and the notebook.
The problem is there is only one port and when I hook up the router the desktop has no internet and I don’t think it even sends the signal out to the notebook anyway.
I tried using the wireless router for both and that didn’t work either. I just plugged it in like the cable modem. Is there anything I’m doing wrong? How can i get internet for both?
Right now internet is much to slow for the notebook because it’s using a wireless card.

u need a wireless card or usb wireless thingy for the pc as well … u should just be able to plug in the modem to the router and reboot everything and they should connect … maybe run the wireless wizard on both and go into the routers config and set security or watever …

all u have to do it. the cable from the cable modem goes to the wireless router and from there another cable goes to the computer. after that only ur wireless router will transmit the wireless single. let me know if need more help

Hey there,
I can get you through this with little problems. However, you have to read the instructions. Sorry.
Okay here goes.
Your wireless router should have at least 5 ethernet ports on the back of it. They are those things that look like giant telephone plugs. One of them is label WAN and the rest LAN.
The ethernet cable from the cable modem MUST go into the WAN port of the wireless router. Then you need another cable to go from one of your LAN ports to your computer.
Out of the box, usually DHCP is turned on. If it is not, the instructions should show you what ip address to give your workstation in order to configure it.
Once you set your workstation address, you should be able to open a web browser and type the address of the wireless router into the Address box. Usually this address is something like 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. This should get you to some sort of authentication screen. The username and password is in the instructions and is different for each model of wireless device.
Once in there, you can configure a myriad of different things. Probably the most important thing, right off the bat, to configure is DHCP, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. This is what hands out DORA requests to connect to your network.
Once you are at this point, you need to configure your wireless system. Please read the instructions for that. I would suggest that you start without security and then add it in.

well first of all you dont plug a wireless router to a computer. you need wireless lan card for your dextop. your laptop already has it. now unplug the cable modem from the hub, which is connected to the cable that come from the service provider. and then plug the wireless router to the hub. now install your wireless network device to you dextop(if you already have not done it), then you will see your wireless device getting signal, hence connection.
( first make sure that you have the hub(with one out put)+ router(wireless or weired with multiple output and antenna)+ wireless network card)

It’s very hard to provide a good answer without information on the actual model numbers of your devices, but here goes:
Since you need to connect multiple devices, you’ll need what’s called a network switch/hub (they’re different, but primarily in that a switch is faster). A switch will usually have 4 or more ports to connect devices. If none of your equipment has multiple ports like this you won’t be able to do what you want, but many times wireless routers will have a switch built in.
Assuming the router has ports to plug into, you’ll want to plug the cable modem into the WAN port on the router, and the desktop into the router. You’ll need to setup the desktop software to talk to the router instead of the cable modem so you can configure it. The router should give you instructions for that. Then you need to set the configuration that you had on the desktop (you wrote it down, right?) into the router, since it’s connecting directly to the cable modem.

A broadband connection can be shared between 2 or more computers using a router . Though wireless connections are becoming popular, a wired connection is usually more secure and faster. The router used for a wired connection is also cheaper. More details at http://fixit.in/shareinternet.html
1 disconnect the cable modem from the your desktop
2 look on wireless router for a WAN port
3 connect cable modem to the WAN port on wireless router
4 connect wireless router to desktop
5 connect laptop to wireless router
