You need drivers for your ethernet card, modem, and anything else that’s missing. If your computer came with XP, it shouldn’t be that hard to find everything (go to the manufacturer’s site and check for downloads for your computer’s model number). If your computer didn’t come with XP, you might have to reinstall Vista to find out what make and model the hardware in the machine is so you can find drivers.
Oh, and if you can, install XP SP3.

Go into the Device Manager inside the System control panel under the "Hardware" tab. See if there are any ethernet controllers or network adapters with a "?" Icon. If this is the case, you need to select it, and choose "Update driver", and then choose the path of the driver. The driver is often on a CD that comes with your motherboard or computer (in the case of a laptop) if the network adapter is onboard. If it is a separate card, USB device, or PCMCIA device, chances are its on a CD that came with the card. You can probably also obtain the driver from the computer or network card makers website URL.

1-Go to CPL (Control Panel) ->Network Connections. if there a Local Area Connection exist right click on it and choose Properties and below under General Tab check the first option (show icon in notification …) and press Ok. then right click again and choose first item Enable.
2- If there isn’t any connection in your Network Connection your Lan didn’t install properly. you can install driver from Cd Or download it from net.
