How do I connect an Ethernet cable to an Xbox 360 and play Live?
I decided to save money and buy an ethernet cable rather than a wireless adaptor. How does it work?
If I connect my xbox to a modem for my internet, will it work?

from where I sit staring at my boyfriend’s xbox, it looks like it just plugs into the back somewhere. and then you would plug the other end into a router? I think that’s how he has it set up!

The easiest way to put your 360 online is to use a router. This is a device which sits between your ISP’s modem, and your computer, laptop, 360, or other internet-enabled device.
Routers have 4 or 5 ethernet ports on the back of them, and many models also have a wireless antenna.
Anyways, once you’ve configured the router, simply plug in your 360 to one of the ethernet ports on the back, and that should be it. The router will provide your PS3 with the internet settings needed for it to get online automatically.

You need to use the supplied cord (Ethernet Cord) connected to the only port it’ll fit in on the back of Microsoft’s XBOX 360. The other end of the Ethernet Cord needs to be plugged into a router or modem port. Simply a device that is receiving an internet connection. Many wireless routers have auxiliary LAN (Ethernet) ports you can put the other end of your Ethernet Cord into. Once that is done, purchase a subscription to XBOX LIVE and fill out the information and you should be ready to go.
Also, in the XBOX Dashboard you can test your connection to see if you can identify further problems. You will also need a broadband connection.

Plug one end into the console and the other end into a router.

You’ll need to connect one end of the ethernet cable to your 360, and the other end to something in your house that’s on the internet. A router works very well. Or if you have a computer with two ethernet ports or a wireless connection and an ethernet port, you can set up Windows Internet Connection Sharing. This lets the Xbox "piggyback" on your computer’s internet connection.
If you need more details, I’ll check back tomorrow and see if I can answer them.
Edit: Yes, if your internet modem is high-speed with an ethernet port in the back, it’ll work. You won’t be able to get online with your computer at the same time that way, but it WILL get your Xbox online.
