How can I create a wireless network using AT&T?
I have a desktop which is hardwired, running windows XP, and a wireless laptop running windows Vista. I want to set up a wireless network so that I can access my desktop files using my laptop. Eventually, I would like my desktop to be wireless as well. Any suggestions for keeping this going when I have to disconnect my computer from the router?
BTW, I am using AT&T, so they have their own modem/router.

steps:
1) Is the router wireless? If so move to step 2. If not, then go buy a wireless router and then move to step 2.
2) Go into the routers configuration page and make sure that wireless is enabled and the SID is set to display. I would also rename it to something unique.
3) Turn on your laptop, go to the wireless networks tab, and see if you can find the SID you just set. if so, try to connect. if it works, great! you are networked. If it doesn’t, would need to know what happened to help you further.
4) if it connects, log back into the router and configure wireless security so neighbors cant piggyback on your network.
5) now that the network is set up, you need to go into the machines and configure file and printer sharing. if you get this far, post a new question as that has its own set of potential problems to deal with.
