hooking antenna to cable modem for wifi?
Can I turn a cable phone modem or cable modem into a wireless adaptor by plugging up rabbit ears to it??????????
I have a Acer Aspire 3689, 802.11b/g wireless LAN. My issue is pickng up wifi/hot spot signals because I live in a rural area. I’ve gone to the cantenna sites and this has led me back to another idea ihad, I have a ARRIS model TM502G modem. My computer still detects it but I get a local connection. I connected t to my cable here eventhough this is a new place and I don’t have internet, can I replace that with a rabbit ear antenna set up and pick up wifi? I know its more complicated then just plugging it in, what else would I need to do to get the modem to respond to this?
I HAVE AN INTERNET CONNECTION, IT DOES NOT GO FAR ENOUGH, MY LAPPY IS A ROUTER ASWELL AS RECEIVE, IM BASING THIS IDEA ON THE CANTENNA CONCEPT UNLESS YOU ALL KNOW HOW TO BOOST MY ACER WIFI

Rabbit ears are not the right antenna. So not a workable solution that way. There would have to be an outside wifi source for you to connect anyways. If not then you may be stuck (as most in rural areas are) with dialup.

To get wifi you need three things.
1. Internet Connection
2. Wifi Router/Modem/Access Point
3. Wifi Receiver in Laptop/Computer
If you don’t have internet connection you don’t have internet!
So until you solve the first issue you won’t have internet!
The router will not "receive" internet wirelessly!!! It is an AP called an access point, it is not a client device to receive internet, its a transmitter to send wireless internet!
No you can’t use "rabbit ears". you have to use a 2.4 gig antenna for better "reception" and that has to be done on a CLIENT unit (like your laptop) not the AP, So we are back to point 1. You need internet!
You can indeed BUY long range wifi antennas, visit
http://hyperlinktech.com for some examples. But unless you have something you can aim them at and pick up wifi from you still won’t get connected to the internet!
sorry but that’s the way it works.
