Does an Ethernet cable splitter make the connection that much slower?
I have internet connected through the wiring of my house. The unit is located in the basement with one jack for a regular Ethernet cable.
I have a laptop and a ps3 so in order to have them both connected (to save me the time of disconnecting and reconnecting) I would need a splitter. My primary concern is the speed.
Any fellow users have suggestions?

It WILL slow down if two people are using it. Yes.
If it is a two-splitter (Converting the one into two) and two people are attempting to use the internet at the same time, then yes it will split the speed of the cable. (My cables are 100mb/s, so it would be 50mb/s per each computer.)

First of all, its called a switch or hub. Hubs are old now, switches and routers are new.
if you wana have fun with cables all in your home, then go for switch but if you want it clean, buy a router, you will be able to connect ur laptop with wifi and you can take it anywhere in your home, o yeah, anywhere
a router can give u wireless connections and it also has ports for ethernet cables. ps3 also has wifi option, check urs, i hope ur got that too.
about the speed, if you are using internet on 2 devices at the same time, then the speed will split to half for sure, it depends how much load you are putting on the internet connection. but if you are playing online games on the internet using your ps3 and downloading movies on your laptop, then it wont matter. a router may cost a bit more than the switch, but its a better option, no more wires.

If your concern is speed within your LAN, then you’ll need a switch. There is no such thing as a splitter really, other than the mentioned hub.
If your concern is broadband speed, then usually a hub will do, but nobody uses hubs anymore these days, so go for a cheap switch.

Ethernet does not come into your house. The Internet comes to your house to a cable, cable company or wire from the telephone company. That cable/wire connects from the outside to a Modem. The Modem has an Ethernet Jack to connect to your laptop and a ps3.
You CANNOT splitter a Ethernet cable to connect both laptop and ps3 to work as the same time. What you need is a "router" to the WAN Ethernet from your modem, and several Ethernet jacks on the LAN side of the "router" to connect two cables to your laptop and ps3.
