D-Link DWA-111 Wireless Adapter For Windows XP – Error/Help?!?
I recently bought a DIR-301 D-link wireless router and it installed perfectly on my downstairs computer. It came with a DWA-111 wireless adapter which I have tried to install on my windows XP in my bedroom but it keeps telling me that the installation failed and tells me that files are either missing or corrupt. My computer also fails to recognise the tech being installed.
The computer I installed the router on was also a windows XP and as I said, it works perfectly.
I have tried installing and uninstalling and rebooting the computer but it doesn’t seem to work and I have searched the web and it seems lots of people are having the exact same difficulty with the adapter.
It would be great if someone could give me any suggestions?

I would also like to point out, before anyone decides to state the obvious, I did contact D-link support and they just advised to install and uninstall and reboot comp.
( Basically their help was useless )
I know that it is the computer rather than the adapter that’s the problem:
I tried it on the pc downstairs and it worked.
Yeah it is SP2.

What version of XP do you have on the upstairs computer? Has it been patched to at least SP2? The chances are, if it is not fully patched, the adapter will not install.

How are you trying to install the DWA-111 wireless adapter? However its installed, may be the problem. If it uses a USB connection, maybe switch to another USB port. If its installed into a PCI slot, maybe try another slot. It could actually be the computer… If not, bring the router up form downstairs and give it a try on the bedroom pc and put the adapter downstairs.. just switch things around to try to find the problem.

I hate to say but unfortuniately some support agents don’t want to help…try calling back (you’ll probably get a different agent) and ask them to walk you through the steps for fixing the problem. When I got my job they told us if we call tech support and they don’t want to help we should hang up and call back – I don’t like it but it’s true and works.
I got a Netgear adapter and had a similar problem to you. I exchanged it for a LInksys WUSB54GC adapter and it works well…then again I had a Linksys printer server that was terrable.

EDIT:
If it’s really your computer corrupt, I’m afraid to say you probably have to reinstall Windows to fix the problem.
First try running check-disk just in case that fixes it. If you do have to reinstall, make sure you back up the data (burn to CDs or something) so you don’t loose it.

seems to be an odd model
one obvious point that may have been missed – wrong driver or the driver has been updated
look on the adapter label or model number
look for a "v"
that is the version number
they change these things all the time
if you have version 1 driver and the specific model is version 2 or 2.2 or something like that that can do it
uninstall your tcip if possible
network connections > that card > tcip remove if possible
reboot it will reinstall
Windows xp is generally pretty good with usb ( as compared to windows 98)
You can ignore the instructions and try to install it every wrong way to see if you get any luck that way
Make sure wireless usb is closely attached to the computer – i.e. not on an extension
after successful install ( if ever) use a usb extension to get it up and away from the metal computer case and desk
the dlink usb wi fi adapters are just terrible
do not know why
the generic zyadas based adapters are tons better
have fun
one thing to watch for – that is if the card was installed – that in windows xp and 2000 windows successfully names the network connection down the line – network connections 1 , 2 , 3 etc
even if you only have one or two cards
rename the connection
that is not the issue i know
