can you use the ethernet cord on the ps3 without wireless internet?

i am getting wired internet for christmas and i want to use the ethernet cord on the ps3 but im not sure if you can do so with a wired connection. PLEASE HELP!!! (and if you know if charters wireless internet comes with a router, that would help)
